Old Wooden Buckets

While cleaning out the old barn the other day, I found two old wooden buckets. What do you think?

Being so old, they can’t hold water any longer, but I thought they would make excellent planter covers so I went the home center and picked up some African violets, two Marguerites and a few dahlias.

Gallery dahlia to be exact. The little card that came with them says they are compact and should produce tons of flowers. Sounds great to me.

Before moving to this old traditional house, I rarely visited a garden let alone thought about making or maintaining one, but you live and you learn, I guess. Thank goodness for social media, it is so helpful for getting a lot of information, tons of ideas and inspiration.

In the past, it was common for people to use the bitter juice of persimmons to help preserve the wood and give it a nice color, a natural wood stain. Some people make their own persimmon stain but luckily it is also sold in the stores. That is one more project to go on the list.
