The Kuchiba family were vassals to the Mori clan; the hereditary rulers of Western Japan during the Warring States period. Following Sekigahara, the Tokugawa Shogun ordered the Mori to relocate from Iwaguni to Hagi to establish a new castle town. Establishing a new castle town required the Mori to gather their most trusted allies and supporters including the Kuchiba.
Born the illegitimate son of Mori Motonari, the founder of the family, Shiji Hiroyoshi, originally from Akiguni near modern day Hiroshima, relocated to Iwamiguni, modern day Iwami in Shimane prefecture, taking the name of Kuchiba after the downfall of the Takahashi in and or around 1529. Hiroyoshi’s son, Michiyoshi was known for being a brilliant strategist and having gained the trust of the Mori, became one of their most trusted and closest advisors.
The main house and gate date back to the 18th century. The white and blue Namako style wall of the gate is the largest and most beautiful in the city. The house is open every day from 9:00 to 5:00pm except Wednesdays. Admission is 100 yen and minors are free. From the house you can easily access the Horiuchi Kaimagari; a stone lined labyrinth like area of corners designed to confuse castle invaders. It is a wonderful place to walk and pass the time.
